A docent-led "Bouquet of Flowers" hike at Russian Ridge includes spring wildflowers, birds, butterflies and all the best parts of nature.

April 26, 2015—A docent-led trek at Russian Ridge Open Space Preserve on Friday made for a hiking experience complete with wildflowers, birds and insects. Grasshopper sparrow, red-tailed hawk and six types of butterflies were among the interesting non-floral sights at the park.
The winding 3.5-mile walk ventured through alternating woods and open hills. The leisurely pace allowed for plenty of wildflower viewing, photographing and fun fact-sharing. The group of hikers connected and conversed about the surrounding beauty—including at least 20 different types of wildflowers.
Sometimes the flowers were as captivating to the touch as to the eye. The center of the gum plant, for example, feels like glue. It turns out that the sticky center’s purpose is to protect the plant from insects and sunlight.
The hike also passed a section of mugwort—an ordinary-looking green plant that is a powerful neutralizer. When applied to the affected area on the skin, mugwort is an antidote to poison oak and stinging nettle. Good to know.
Under a group of trees resided a woodrat’s nest—the only such nest in Russian Ridge and identified as an unusually large one. According to the docents, woodrats cleverly build their nest in the middle of a poison oak patch, so humans are less likely to get to it.
As intriguing as the plants and animals were, the scenic views of the hike did not go unnoticed. Right before approaching Borel Hill, the group paused to enjoy a 360-degree view with no streets or houses in sight.
Even though “Bouquet of Flowers” is over, now is the perfect time to visit Russian Ridge—especially to view wildflowers. Docent Bill Bauriedel added that this year has been one of the park’s best regarding the number and variety of wildflowers.
But chances are, you may get an eyeful of more than petals.
