Fossils in Santa Cruz Mountains and Beaches

Learn about the traces and remains of ancient creatures that regularly surface in Santa Cruz, and about the rock formations millions of years old that harbor them.

By Hilltromper Staff

Hey Silicon Valley natural-history nerds! (We know you’re out there.) You may recall that last summer, an ancient mastodon tooth was discovered over the hill in Aptos. And you may recall that the spectacular fossil vanished briefly, and was later recovered by the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History.

As it happens, fossils surface with some regularity on the beaches of Santa Cruz, and in abandoned quarries throughout the Santa Cruz Mountains—and so the Museum has a wonderful fossil collection.

Kathleen Aston, the Museum’s Collections Manager, explains what can be found in three formations that date back 20 million years (!) in this "Fossil-Hunting Fun" article over on Hilltromper Santa Cruz. You can also find out about Family Fun with Fossils day at the Museum on March, 30, 2024.
