Headquartered over the hill in the lovely Seabright neighborhood, the Santa Cruz Museum of Natural History has been leading students on field trips since 1970—so our friends at the museum know how to mix a little bit of fun in with their nature education.
Here are a couple of examples. One is called Fall Creek Bingo, and it involves visiting a little-known yet beloved park just outside Felton in the Saint Lorenzo Valley. Of interest: the ruins of historic old lime kilns that once fueled one of the area’s biggest industries.
Another of the Museum’s time-honored kids’ activities is a classic animal-tracking checklist. This one can be used anywhere in the Santa Cruz Mountains, because it includes many of the species found throughout the region, but the Museum is suggesting you take it—along with some of your favorite children—to a special place.
The pond at Quail Hollow Ranch is a watering hole for the critters who live at another hidden gem right near the San Lorenzo Valley. As you might find out very soon, Quail Hollow offers easy access to one of the most diverse ecosystems in Northern California.
