Feb. 6, 2024—1. The Historic Filoli Estate and Gardens
Filoli is an immersive experience. Its centerpiece is a country mansion so grand and beautiful that it was used as the exterior of the Carrington home on the television series Dynasty. The main attraction comprises 16 acres of gardens with 250 fruit trees alone. According to a 2010 article in Smithsonian magazine, a famed British landscape designer named Filoli as "the most beautiful formal garden in America." For day-trippers, Filoli’s cafe offers a lovely setting to relax amid the colorful blooms, have lunch or a snack, and rest up before or after walking the extensive property.

Visitors have the option of taking a private tour through the gardens, including sparkling wine and a chocolate gift, or a self-guided trip to experience the sublime estate at their leisure. Until Feb. 22, you can also see a display of rare orchids from the San Francisco Conservatory of Flowers.

2. Central Park and Japanese Gardens
In the heart of the city of San Mateo lies Central Park and the San Mateo Japanese Gardens, both of which offer surprises in plain sight for fans of urban nature. Koi and lily ponds adorn this green space in the center of the city. Designed by the famed landscape architect Nagao Sakurai of the Imperial Palace of Tokyo, this is one of the finest Japanese gardens in the Bay Area. The cherry blossom trees, Japanese maples and bamboo plants that one expects to line the walkways in such a place make this particular garden an uncommonly sweet spot for a long walk in the park.

A classic contemporary Valentine’s Day move calls for a visit to the rose garden in Central Park for selfies under the gazebo. This garden holds more than 21 beds filled with a wide variety of blossoms in all colors and species.

3. Seal Point Park
Some dates are just better by the water. For romantics who want to stroll hand-in-hand along San Francisco Bay, a trip to Seal Point Park will not disappoint. Only a few minutes walk from downtown San Mateo, this quiet waterfront park has paths and green space to sit and enjoy the bay breeze.

Notably, Seal Point Park is also home to a unique kinetic sculpture installation including a wind organ, sound reflectors, and wind-driven sculptures. You may also see some kayakers and wind-surfers, as this is a popular spot for water activities—adventurous types may want to join in. During February the green space is lush after the winter storms, so packing a picnic basket and sitting on the grass along the waterfront can be great for this time of year. A bonus feature for dog-lovers is a space to run around at the dog park, for those with a four-legged third-wheel.

4. The Barrell and Bistro Wine Bar
The Barrell and Bistro Wine Bar is a romantic and cozy spot with an exciting menu. Splitting the Lobster Risotto is one option, or you could opt for the Traditional Paella. Ask your waiter to recommend a wine to pair with your dinner, as the wine menu is extensive and offers almost endless possibilities.

5. Amour Amour Wine Bar
Amour Amour Wine Bar, as the name suggests, is another wonderful option for a Valentine’s date. Tapas are perfect to share, and the decor is reminiscent of a European getaway. Romantics will love this spot and the wine selection—find out which wine pairings are available on the day you stop by.

6. B-Street and Vine Wine Bar
Finally, for our more casual wine-lovers, B-street and Vine Wine Bar, a local favorite since 2006, offers a selection of wines from California and the world, mostly in the $20-$40 range. Their menu includes starters, sandwiches and salads, and their desserts are a must-try. Tiramisu at the end of a Valentine’s Day dinner can sometimes be what love is all about.
